Actually, they are probably used on midnight fishing trips. You would clip them to the poles so that if one dropped on deck you would be able to find it in the dark.
MaryJane did some research & found where you can buy these bells. Also, I think they're to indicate a hit from a fish, not a rod locator. Then again, fishermen are known to drink a lot of beer & may need that kind of help, too! heh heh
Thanks for clearing that up! You know how much I love the full moon! I will defend it till the end....when it becomes a new moon. Funny how close I was on the guess though. I really want some of those bells now!!!!!
Every day for a year I will post a new painting or drawing of treasures found during beach walks.
On June 26, 2010, South Street Gallery (located in Greenport, Long Island) will exhibit the entire body of work--all 365 pieces. There will be a preview showing the day before the opening. Please visit the gallery's website:

I have no idea what these are, but Ilove them!
I don't know what they are, either. Anyone want to venture a guess?
Why do these make me laugh? They have such a life!
You don't have any idea what clip-on bells are? I have them clipped to everything!
But...but what does one clip them to? & why would they wash up on a beach?
from the free dictionary.com
with bells on;
with a lot of enthusiasm
eg. "Are you going to the party tonight, Michael?" "I'll be there with bells on."

Anonymous--thanks for clearing up the mystery. And what a fine use for the bells. Now if we could only figure out your identity....
I,m a fisherman's wife. I've only been on one 3am fishing trip in my life, but there was a full moon.....no need for clip-ons.

Note: the post above was a duplicate, & thus deleted, & NOT a coverup of slander directed against husbands, full moons, or fishermen.
